Problem

Many people find it difficult to make balanced and flavorful cocktails at home, often due to limited knowledge about ingredients or the cultural background of drinks.
Cocktails are also costly and seem intimidating to prepare without guidance.

This research aimed to understand users’ challenges and explore how an app could make cocktail making accessible, educational, and enjoyable — helping adults mix drinks while discovering global drinking traditions.

Guiding Questions

WHY LUMINU?

01

How does providing cultural context alongside cocktail recipes impact user engagement and knowledge retention?

02

What features do users find most helpful when learning to create cocktails at home, and how can these be optimized in the app?

03

How do I give added value but also not exceed the main purpose for which the application was created?

Learning Outcomes

Approaching the research

Insights gained from interviews and secondary research guided the design process and revealed user needs that I hadn’t thought of.

The importance of early experimentation

I learned how crucial it is to come up with additional options, especially in the initial planning and formulation stages. Testing different ideas and layouts early on allowed me to identify the most effective design solutions.

Refining the app structure‏

With the structure of my app, early experimentation helped refine the navigation, design, and overall user experience.

Design Process

My step-by-step process from idea to final product

User research

// As living costs are high, people increasingly prefer to stay home with friends. However, a lack of knowledge about alcoholic beverages and cocktails makes it challenging to recreate their favorite bar or restaurant cocktails at home

My research indicates that many people lack basic knowledge about cocktails, which prevents them from hosting gatherings and creating enjoyable at-home experiences

Insights

//  Clear and simple recipes: Users prefer recipes that are straightforward and easy to follow, valuing an efficient approach without extra steps or unnecessary complications

// Lack of experience: Most users are unfamiliar with cocktail names, flavors, and the correct proportions needed to create them.

// Cultural connection: Users are interested in understanding the origins of the beverages they prepare and how a drink's geographical origin influences its taste.

    User flow

Through the investigation, I understood how I guide users seamlessly from the home page to a detailed cocktail recipe, while also presenting them with more cultural sources without additional steps.

    Sketches

At the first stage, once I had a clear direction, I created sketches focusing on a clean, intuitive design that feels easy and enjoyable to use — without unnecessary pages.

    Sketches Wireframes

After the initial sketches, I created another phase of wireframes to improve the user experience.

At this stage, text was added to provide clear instructions for users, and to allow for easy navigation of the pages before the design phase. During the work, it became clear that design changes were needed to better support the concept.
